Ski holidays Zoldo – ski in the valley of ice cream!

Zoldo

The Val di Zoldo, with its three municipalities of Forno di Zoldo, Zoldo Alto and Zoppé di Cadore is a well-developed valley for tourists in the province of Belluno. Its embedded in the rugged, varied landscape between the Monte Pelmo (3,168 m) and the Monte Civetta (3,220 m). This unparalleled mountain landscape, with its striking mountain ranges and jagged steep faces, serves as one of the particular instances of beauty in the Belluno Dolomites and the UNESCO world heritage site.

The main resort in the valley is Forno di Zoldo (848 m), with 2,300 inhabitants. Its name stems from the town's long tradition of iron manufacturing. Many smelting furnaces (Italian: forno) and forges were built here over the centuries, some of which can still be visited today. More information about the history of iron manufacturing can be found in the local Museum of Iron and Nail. The tourist centre for winter sports fans is located in Zoldo Alto, which lies further back in the valley at an altitude of 1,177 m. The village is somewhat smaller, but no less lively than the main resort. The entry point to the ski area Civetta, the largest ski area in the Veneto region with 80 km of piste, is located in the district of Zoldo-Pecol.

Alongside its scenic, sporty and cultural charms, the Val di Zoldo is also famous for its ice cream. The handmade "Gelato artigianale", the mother of all ice cream, comes from Zoldo. The locals celebrate their long ice cream tradition and its worldwide fame in Zoldo on the 24th March, the "Gelato-Day".

Civetta

The Civetta region is located in the fascinating mountain landscape of the Belluno Dolomites. The landscape is characterised by the highest peak of the Dolomites, the Marmolada (3,343 m), and other impressive mountains like the Monte Pelmo, but also through woodland and meadows, as well as traditional villages. Three wonderful valleys are part of the region: the Val di Zoldo, where the famous Italian ice cream "Gelato artigianale" originated from, the Val Fiorentina, with its ski resort Selva die Cadore, as well as the Val Cordevole, with its well-known holiday resort of Alleghe.

The region is named after its most prominent summit, the Civetta (Italian for owl). With a height of 3,220 m, it is one of the highest mountains in the Dolomites and is part of the mighty Civetta-Moiazza group in the north east of the Belluno province. The largest ski area in Veneto is located on Civetta: Ski Civetta. It comprises 80 km of pistes of all levels of difficulty and belongs to the Dolomiti Superski lift network. Around the mountain there are four picturesque mountain villages, each of which allowing for access to the ski area: Alleghe, Selva di Cadore, Zoldo and Palafavera.

On the north-west side in the Cordevole valley, the centre of tourism is concentrated in the main resort of Alleghe, which lies next to a idyllic mountain lake. Alleghe's neighbour and another important resort for skiing in Civetta is Selva di Cadore, located at an altitude of 1,317 m. A chair lift goes from there up into the ski area. On the other side of the mountain group, there's the Val di Zoldo with the municipality of Zoldo. From the Zoldo Alto and Palafavera resorts, access to the ski area is also possible.
