Ski holidays Vernago – Pure skiing fun on the Ötzi glacier!

Vernago

Vernagt am See lies at an altitude of 1,700 metres in the upper part of the Schnals Valley. However, Vernagt has not always been on the lake. It was only in the 1950s that the 65 metre high, green dam was built and the lake was dammed. Eight old farmsteads sank into the water at that time. In spring, when the water level is low, the tower of the chapel, which stood in the middle of the farmsteads, still protrudes from the water.

In summer, the lake impresses with its incomparable emerald green colour. In winter, Vernagt is the ideal starting point for excursions to the nearby glacier ski area where the world-famous "Ötzi" was found - and at the same time a somewhat quieter alternative to the sports village of Kurzras.

Val Senales

The 22 km long valley of Val Senales is the one most supported by tourism in the South Tyrol Vinschgau. Especially mentionable is the diverse scenery which can be found on such a small area - from the vineyards at the valley entrance right up to the sparkling ice at the glacier at the back end of the valley. The Schnalser Bach runs along the valley floor, which is used a water reservoir at the upper end of the valley, caused by the Vernagt dam. The region is not only known for its glacier ski area with its 27.5 km of piste. It also gained a lot of attention, caused by a German couple who were hiking in the upper end of the valley, at the Tisenjoch, where they found the ice mummy Ötzi, back in September 1991. The archaeological activity museum "ArcheoParc Schnals" therefore has dedicated itself to research and information on the life and surroundings of the "man from the ice".
