Ski holidays Grainau – The cosy village at the Zugspitze!

Grainau (Zugspitze)

The small village of Grainau is 700 years old and lies in the shadow of the Zugspitze (2,962 m) and the striking Waxenstein (2,277 m) in the Wetterstein mountains. Against the backdrop of a picturesque Alpine landscape and two fantastic mountain lakes, the Grainau valley unfolds its natural and unspoilt splendour. The Upper Bavarian village itself, divided into Obergrainau and Untergrainau, also epitomises a rural idyll. The best-known motif is the neo-baroque parish church of St John with its pretty onion dome. The village has around 3,500 inhabitants and lies at an altitude of around 760 metres above sea level. The village is a wonderful haven of peace with a magnificent view of the Alps and links to the lively town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, which is only around 7 km to the north-east. In Grainau, holiday guests can enjoy many winter sports activities such as ice skating on the Badersee and Eibsee lakes, cross-country skiing, tobogganing, sleigh rides and, of course, skiing in the Zugspitze ski areas.

Zugspitze

New Year's ski jumping, the Kandahar downhill run and international flair - you can experience all this and much more in the region around Germany's highest mountain! There are also special scenic features such as the Zugspitze itself and the Partnachklamm gorge. In the region, you can get to know ten different ski areas in two countries. The Zugspitzplatt is particularly snow-sure with numerous slopes directly below the Zugspitze. A ride on the Eibsee cable car, which takes pedestrians up to almost 2,950 metres, just below the highest point in Germany, allows you to enjoy a breathtaking panorama. For après-ski, you can meet up in the rustic ski huts or in the evening in the various bars, pubs, clubs and discos. Fun and thrills are also guaranteed with tobogganing and many other leisure activities in the holiday region.
