Ski area Schiland Voralpen

With the "Schiland Voralpen" lift pass a total of 42 km of pistes and 18 lifts in the ski areas of Bürgeralpe, Mitterbach, and Annaberg are available to you.

The ski area "Bürgeralpe" includes a manageable 14 km of pistes. The Mariazeller Bürgeralpe features a cable lift, two 4-person chair lifts and three tow lifts and presents itself as a modern ski area for families with well-prepared pistes of all difficulty levels - it was awarded the Styrian piste seal of approval. Due to the favourable location of the Mariazell region - surrounded by a mountain range - there is an unusual amount of snow for such a relatively low altitude (868 - 1,267 m). Modern snow-making facilities ensure good winter sport conditions until early spring. For snowboarders there is a fun park on the Bürgeralpe with video capturing and children can go wild in the Kinderskiland (children's area).

The Gemeindealpe (up to 43% decline) in Mitterbach and the ski area Annaberg (12.5 km of pistes) can also easily be reached.

Night skiing Mariazell

Mariazell and the local ski area Mariazeller Bürgeralpe not only have the region's famous gingerbread to offer, but also night skiing opportunities. Winter sport enthusiasts can travel to the night ski area Gemeindealpe, which is located only a couple of kilometres away, and can use the piste for a longer time than usual once per week. On this day the floodlit piste of the small ski area is available until dark. If you cannot get enough of skiing, even at night, you should hit the trail. People even commute between the borders of Styria and Lower Austria for some night skiing fun, which makes night skiing for them some kind of "borderline" experience.

Après ski Mariazell

Aside from the pistes, Mariazell is a rather quiet place. You will not see excessive parties like in other ski resorts and can focus on culinary enjoyment, which can be found in the numerous cafés, confectioneries and restaurants featuring many Mariazell specialities. Pistes and cross-country trails are not everything Mariazell has to offer regarding winter sports though. You could try "skijöring" for example. Never heard of it? This fun activity originated in the Scandinavian countries. You put on skis, hold on to a towrope and let yourself get pulled through the snowy countryside by a horse with a rider.

You do not need any horsepower to get on the 1,700 m long toboggan run at the Bürgeralpe - floodlit and also available in the evening. And if you prefer more relaxing activities, you could go ice fishing at the lake Erlaufsee in the nearby town Sankt Sebastian. Here you can also try ice skating and ice diving.
